Abstract:

Introduction: Beta-thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that is prevalent in the Mediterranean region. The patient's
treatment plan must include regular blood transfusions and chelation therapy to effectively manage and eliminate
excess iron in the body. Unfortunately, these treatments can cause physical changes that negatively impact their body
image, self-perception, and social interactions. As a result, many patients may face emotional, psychological, and behavioral
challenges. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the body image of patients with thalassemia major who
have undergone multiple transfusions. Methodology: The methodology involved a comprehensive review of Greek
and international literature using electronic databases like PubMed, Scopus, Medline, Google Scholar, and the Association
of Greek Academic Libraries (HEAL-Link). Results: According to the review, individuals of all ages encounter unique
psychosocial obstacles stemming from a distorted perception of their body. These obstacles can be attributed to specific
facial and physical traits, including low stature, distinct facial features, and hypogonadism. As a result, patients often
experience feelings of inadequacy and susceptibility to both physical and mental health issues. These negative experiences
can harm their relationships with loved ones and peers, their capacity to learn, and their interactions with medical
professionals. Conclusions: Having a dissimilar appearance can elicit various responses from individuals regarding
their body image. Some may embrace it with resilience, while others may outright reject it, and a few may even develop
pathological reactions like depression. Nevertheless, interventions and techniques can enhance self-confidence and selfesteem,
resulting in a significant improvement in the situation.
