Abstract:
Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus type 1 is one of the most serious problems of childhood. It is a chronic condition which affects the quality of patient’s life. In addition, has a negative impact in the parent’s life because of the child suffering. Aim: To investigate the coping strategies adopted by the parents of children with diabetes mellitus type 1 in order to deal with any difficulties that arise due to the disease, in matters related to psychological and social factors. Method: A systematic review was performed and studies were searched in the PubMed and Scopus databases, published during the period 1990-2021. Results: A total of 148 articles were identified from the search, and 9 articles were included in the systematic review. Studies have shown that social support, psychological support from health professionals, psychoeducation, relaxation techniques, increasing knowledge about diabetes and adoption of positive coping strategies, have a positive impact on the difficulties faced by parents who have a child with diabetes mellitus type 1. Conclusions: Coping strategies and social support faced by parents of a child with diabetes mellitus type 1 vary and it is necessary to conduct more studies in order to reach to a safer conclusion about the better and more effective coping strategy which must absorbed by the parents of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
