Abstract:
Introduction: Hemodialysis is a method of replacing renal function, essential for the survival of patients with end-stage renal disease.Aim: To investigate the factors of adequate hemodialysis and its importance for the patients' quality of life.Methodοlogy: A systematic literature review was performed in the online database PubMed. The PRISMA method was used. Research studies written in the English language and published from 2002 to 2021 were included. The keywords used for the search were: dialysis, dialysis adequacy, quality of life. From the search, 234 articles-studies were found, of which 11 were finally used. Results: Dialysis adequacy was found to improve with the incorporation of ROM exercise during hemodialysis, the use of stepwise sodium filtration and ultrafiltration profiles and stepwise dialysate flow rate profiles, and with long intermittent dialysis. In contrast, citric acid and the type of vascular access were not found to affect the adequacy of dissolution. Most studies reported a positive association between dialysis adequacy and patient quality of life, while one study reported no association. Conclusions: Performing adequate and effective hemodialysis can improve patients' quality of life and reduce the complications of renal failure.
