Abstract:
Introduction: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder whose effects over time have a devastating effect on patients and as well as their family members. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the burden of family caregivers of people with schizophrenia. Methodology: The methodology followed included searching for research data, which was collected through electronic databases PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, ResearchGate. Results: The factors that lead to the occurrence of family burden of people with schizophrenia are related to the patient himself and the disease, as well as to family caregivers. The literature review confirmed the hypothesis that long-term care of patients with schizophrenia increases the weight of family members / caregivers, adversely affecting their mental health. This can lead to an increase in family / caregiver stress as well as a reduction in care provided.Family therapy and the necessary psychosocial interventions combined with medication seem to contribute to the most effective treatment of the family burden, to the optimal stay of the patient in the community and to its functional integration. Conclusions: Knowledge of the family burden of people with schizophrenia can help in planning and implementing rehabilitation and support programs for the patient and his family.
