Abstract:
Introduction: The retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), known since 1942 as retrofocal fibroplasia, is an evolutionary disorder involving preterm infants and is characterized by abnormal retinal vascular development. Objective: To investigate the superiority of laser laser coagulation in retinopathy of prematurity compared with other therapeutic techniques. Methodology: Bibliography from search in the databases PubMed and Scopus, as well as reviews of the last five years were used. Results: Laser coagulopathy presents bigger rates of highest visual acuity, as well as lower rates of complications compared with other methods of treatment, such as cryotherapy and other surgical technics. Moreover, it has a clear predominance in effective disease management compared to other surgical methods, it is an ideal method for ROP zone I, it is associated with better visual acuity after its application, fewer structural anomalies in the eyes and a lower incidence of complications. Conclusions: Laser photocoagulation is the standard therapy for treating the disease.
