Abstract:
Introduction: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a common problem that affects up to 20% of 5‐year‐old children and may have significant psychological, emotional, and social consequences for both the child and their family. It is characterized as recurrent involuntary voiding that occurs during sleep. Purpose: To provide a overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapeutic approach of NE. Methodology: The PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were searched using the keywords: nocturnal enuresis, childhood, primary enuresis, secondary enuresis, treatment. Results: The etiology of NE is complex and not yet well understood. A thorough history taking and physical examination with laboratory tests and imaging evaluations can help in the differential diagnosis from other pathologic entities. Treatment is based on behavioral and pharmaceutical interventions. The appropriate treatment chosen depends on the age of the children, the characteristics of the disease, and the preferences of the family and the child. Conclusions: NE is a common disorder that affects both the child and the family in many ways. Appropriate information and education of parents and children, as well as timely and valid diagnosis and treatment are the main pillars of life quality improvement of all family members.
