Abstract:

Introduction: Post-operative nursing care and pain management are both important in preventing adverse outcomes. Nurses play an important role in providing patients with advice and guidance on the results of treatments such as the use of complementary and alternative medicine as well as the effects and side effects of their application.Purpose: In the present work there was an attempt to elucidate the importance of nursing care using complementary and alternative treatment for the treatment of postoperative pain. Material and Methods: A bibliographic review of relevant articles was carried out in Medline/ Pubmed and Google Scholar as well as in relevant books, scientific journals and websites with combinations of the following index words: nursing care, post-operative pain, alternative medicine, acupuncture, manipulation, yoga. Results: The bibliography abounds with studies on the need for hospitalization for postoperative pain. Many alternative and complementary therapies are specifically targeted at pain and therefore could help to address post-operative needs that are not fully covered by conventional approaches. Conclusions: The training of nurses on alternative and complementary treatments is important. Complementary and alternative therapies should be incorpo-rated into undergraduate nursing programs. Nurses could use such methods as acupuncture, chirping, yoga as non-invasive, safe, well-studied and effective methods of treatment in postoperative pain care.
