Abstract:

Introduction: Exposure to light during nighttime sleep is potentially associated with serious adverse conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Purpose: To explore the association that expo-sure to nighttime lighting may have with the risk of developing or experiencing adverse health consequences. Meth-odology: A systematic literature review was performed using the online database PubMed. The PRISMA method was used. Research studies written in the English language and published between 2012 and September 2022 were included. The keywords used for the search were: Sleep, Lighting, Glucose, Lipids, Obesity, Metabolic Diseases. Results: From the search, 105 articles-studies were found, of which 8 were finally used. The review of these studies demonstrated the significant association between exposure to artificial light during night sleep and the increased probability of occurrence or adverse development of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, or dyslipidemia. Of the eight studies, only one does not observe an adverse change in glucose homeostasis after a night's sleep in the presence of light. Conclusions: Sleep disturbance, possibly as a consequence of the modern lifestyle, can lead to the appearance of significant health problems. The factors that negatively affect the quality of sleep can affect the quality of life of the person as a whole and also contribute to the appearance or worsening of diseases.
