Abstract:

Introduction:   Inflammation of the appendix is the most common cause of acute abdomen. It is an urgent surgical disease with significant morbidity, which increases when the diagnosis of the disease is delayed. Purpose: of the study was to explore  the correlation between the occurrence of symptoms in acute  appendicitis and the duration of hospitalization in a pediatric population. Material and Method: The sample of the study consisted of 125 parents of hospitalized children at the Surgical Clinic of the University Hospital « P. & A. Kiriakou» diagnosed with acute appendicitis or acute abdomen, between December 2017 and March 2018. Results: The majority (80%) of the parents who participated in the survey were the mothers of the hospitalized children. In terms of the sex of the hospitalized children, 64.8%  were boys, while the 35,2% girls. The majority of children 60.8% were 6 to 11 years of age. Statistically significant differences were observed, mainly due to the correlation between hospital stay and various parameters. These parameters relate to the child's place of origin, how quickly medical assistance was sought, the examinations that were made, and the time that the surgery was finally done. The time of hospitalization of children with OS does not seem to be influenced by gender and age.  Conclusions: The place of origin of the patients, the time from the initial symptoms to the search for medical assistance, atypical symptoms and the time of surgery are according to the results the main factors associated with an increased duration of hospitalization in children with OS.
